Created in 1965, Mount Storm Lake is a 1,200-acre reservoir on the Stony River in Grant County, WV. At an altitude of more than 3,200 feet, the lake cools Dominion’s Mount Storm Power Station, which means unusually warm water temperatures throughout the year. The lake rarely drops below 60 degrees. It’s a popular destination for boating, fishing, scuba diving, and flatwater paddling.
What Makes It Great
Mount Storm Lake’s location on the Allegheny Front leads to some windy weather—and some awesome paddling. Because of the windy conditions, the lake has wave action that you don’t usually find on flatwater lakes. These conditions give you just the right amount of whitecaps, bouncing, and splashing, which is really fun, thanks to the surprisingly warm water.
The lake water’s warmth is a particularly special perk to this location because it makes it possible to paddle even during the late fall and winter months, without having to worry about cold water temperatures. But Mount Storm Lake is not just popular because of its warm water. It’s also home to beautiful scenery and views. The majestic mountains in the distance, adorned with wind turbines, make for some pretty spectacular sights.
