If you took mountain biking, road cycling, and threw in a bit of trail running, you would end up with the quickly growing niche sport known as cyclocross. "Cross" has exploded in popularity over the last few years, thanks in large part to its fun, casual atmosphere, and ease of entry into the sport. Races consist of short, looped courses, which make it easy to set them up anywhere. Cyclists participate in one of several categories, ranked by skill level and age group, in either PACX (Pennsylvania Cyclocross) or MAC (Mid-Atlantic Cycling) series races. Since autumn is the perfect time for cross racing, here are five cyclocross races near Philadelphia to help you get down and dirty on a bike.
1. Sly Fox Cross
November 8, 2015

Sly Fox Brewery , located in Pottstown, PA, will host the Sly Fox Cross on November 8th, 2015. As part of the PACX series, there are a plethora of races going on with plenty of opportunities to win some prize money. If you enjoy competitive local races and great beer, then the Sly Fox Cross is for you. Rumor is there will be even be Sly Fox beer served on the course. Spectators and racers can enjoy some brews and food in the Sly Fox tasting room after the race.
2. The Kutztown CX
November 13-15, 2015
The Kutztown CX is the perfect event for the avid cyclist looking to race all weekend. On Friday, take part in a fun, nighttime race under the lights, starting at 7:30 PM. On Saturday, the MAC series race will take place from 8:30 AM to 4:15 PM. Finally, on Sunday, the PACX begin at 9:00 AM. All races are located at the Renninger's Farmers Market in Kutztown.
3. Rivertown Cross
December 5, 2015
The Rivertown Cross is a PACX, taking place on the fifth of December in Wrightsville, PA. Located on the banks of the Susquehanna River just outside of Lancaster, PA, this cross race is down to earth and fun for the whole family. Races start at 9:00 AM, with several age group and skill categories. Bring cash to buy food from on-site vendors, including local business Half Nuts Popcorn, serving more than 15 varieties of popcorn.
4. Limestone Cross at the Kiln
December 13, 2015

Round out the fall cross season with the final MAC series race at the Limestone Cross at the Kiln , located in Camp Olympic Park in Emmaus, PA, just 50 miles north of Philadelphia. This race offers the most prize money of any race on our list, which is sure to draw some stiff competition from around the area. Races on the 2.9 kilometer course start at 7:30 AM.
