Tecolote Canyon is very accessible to the city and provides a convenient place to run for locals and visitors alike. This place isn't in the most natural of settings, but it offers a great place to workout, just outside the hustle and bustle of the city. There are a variety of trails to change up your route and put together a very solid workout.
What Makes It Great
There are several trails throughout the park, ranging from 1/2 mile to just under four miles. The almost four-mile out-and-back run is the most popular in the park. Starting at the nature center, it is mostly sand and gravel, but gets hilly near the golf course. In fact, many locals come to the park to run hill sprints on the steep but short climbs, and get in shape for more difficult adventures.
As with most locations in Southern California, bring plenty of water and be on the watch for rattlesnakes!
Who is Going to Love It
Tecolote Canyon is good for anyone trying to get off the pavement of urban San Diego and onto some dirt trails in the surrounding area. Visitors can also capitalize on the variety of educational opportunities on offer at the Tecolote Canyon Nature Center. They offer exhibits on the canyon's animal and plant life, so be sure to bring the kids along for some education and recreation.
