Portland offers a variety of excellent options for road running. The Tom McCall Waterfront Park is a 40-acre park located downtown, on the west side of the Willamette River. For a longer road run, you can cross one of Portland’s beautiful bridges to enjoy the Eastbank Esplanade as well, making this a beautiful city loop. The Eastbank Esplanade is a project for habitat improvement for surrounding wildlife and riverbank restoration, a unique city running experience.
The Banks-Vernonia Trail is an 8-foot wide, 21-mile paved trail, converted from an old historic railroad, that extends from the town of Banks to the town of Vernonia. There are still expansive, restored trestles and elevated railroad platforms, giving runners a sense of history behind the old railroad. The surrounding scenery varies from open fields, mountain views, to sections canopied by trees. The trail is rarely crowded, with different trailheads, which it’s easy to adjust the length of the run.
