The six miles that make up the Herb Parsons Lake Trail is just enough distance to offer a satisfying hiking experience, yet not too difficult for anyone who’s ready to work a bit. It’s a lakeside loop trail that’s best from September to June and is totally pup friendly, as long as they’re on a leash. It’s a bit out of the way (30 miles from Memphis), so you aren’t going to find crowds here.

What Makes It Great

This trail is lovely because it isn’t overly challenging for any level hiker (or for kids who can tackle the distance). You’ll find a pretty straightforward trail that has some muddy and rooty sections, but this six-mile singletrack beauty is perfect for hikers and trail runners alike.

Most of the trail is shrouded in trees, except for a quick stint on some blacktop at one part (but only for about 50 yards). The trail is pretty easy throughout, just be sure to stay on trail and don’t wander out into the nearby archery range.

One of the best parts of the trail, as the name suggests, is that it meanders along a lake, so it’s certainly easy on the eyes as well. The combo of trees and water carve out an excellent space for contemplation and solitude, with the occasional fellow runner or hiker whizzing or strolling by.

The trail is also open to mountain bikers, so pay attention to your surroundings.

Who is Going to Love It

The Herb Parsons Lake Trail is a good option for any level hiker. The narrow singletrack means you can’t hike two or three people wide, but if you’re looking for solitude or a nice hike with your four-legged friend, this is the place to go.

With fishing, hiking, biking, and wildlife-watching, it’s possible for families to make a day trip out of the adventure, too.

Directions, Parking, & Regulations

The park is located about fifteen miles north of Collierville on Fisherville Road. From Collierville, take Highway 205 to Macon Road. Take a right here and then turn right onto Fisherville Road. Turn left into the Herb Parsons Lake entrance. Start on the trail from behind the archery range on the north side of the park.
