Review
Intro
The ever expanding 5.5 mile Aldridge Creek Greenway sits in the heart of the city of Huntsville's 180 mile long term master plan, straddling the meandering creek rewarding riders with fantastic views of beautiful Green Mountain throughout the entire length of the trail. The trails ends at Ditto Landing on the Tennessee River, but connects to the Tennessee River Greenwayr for another few miles of riding pleasure. Future plans will connect this trail to the Jones Valley area, and a proposed 36 mile extension of the Flint River Greenway will link users to the other side of the mountain for more than 50 miles of pedaling pleasure.
What Makes It Great
This wide paved path starts further north, but the best spot to park to start your journey is Ken Johnston Park, and explore the northern 1.25 miles past alternating views of woods and fields that separate the suburban neighborhoods from the creek. You'll cross a bridge and pass another good access spot at a church about a third of the way through, but that's the last spot before reading the current northern terminus at Sunset Cove Branch.
South of Ken Johnston Park the creek turns rocky, resembling more the shoals of the Cahaba River, though nowhere near that stature or scale. Passing Hobbs Island Road, spurs lead off to McGucken Park and the elementary school, leading through the thickest wooded section along the route. Be sure to check out the fall colors here, as they make a marvelous backdrop for the large fields and tall slopes of Green Mountain. You'll dodge under an active rail line before paralleling Hobbs Island Rd and Ditto Landing Rd before meeting up with the Tennessee River Greenway. Take a break at Ditto Landing [there's a great shaded section for camping, and near an old closed bridge] or continue south for another few miles for some great river scenery.
Who is Going to Love It
This greenway is great for all skill levels, from family outings to long distance cyclists. The paved path and level grade make it great for beginners and family outings alike, while the options of exploring longer distances on sidewalks and quiet country roads on the southern terminus provide a great option for those seeking more.
