The Washout

The washout is the most popular spot on Folly to surf, which is a testament to how consistent the swell is, but it also poses a crowd problem. A combo of warm weather and good surf conditions will attract surfers from all over the area to the washout. That being said, the washout is a great spot for a reason. Waves have been known to reach upwards of ten feet on hurricane swells, and the narrow strip of beach is dominated by surfers, so you do not have to worry about hitting the occasional 9 year old during your surf session. The washout earned its name from Hurricane Hugo, during which the row of houses that used to be there were washed away. What’s left is a strip of beach about 600 yards long that contains excellent southeastern swell patterns and shallow breakers.
