Austin is a running town, and you will undoubtedly see that in the crowds running on weekends, especially at the city’s running hub, the Butler Hike and Bike Trail. Because it’s 10 miles of safe, beautiful, and smooth trail skirting Ladybird Lake in the center of downtown, it attracts thousands of runners year round.
Also near Ladybird Lake is the Shoal Creek Greenbelt, a 7-mile path winding through beautiful trees along a creek. While still centrally located, the Mount Bonnell Scenic Drive is a great running workout. At 800 meters with 800 feet of elevation, it’s relatively short but it gets your heart pumping.
These are just a few of the road running possibilities in Austin. All along the river, Riverside Drive, and throughout town are many other routes with different variations. The city is also home to marathons and other regular events, as well as various running groups. So if you’re in Austin, you will find lots of places to run, and lots of people to run with.
