There are several ways to access this trail, which provide options for every type and level of trail runner. No matter which way you access Hunter Creek Trail, you're in for a long, beautiful alpine valley featuring a pristine creek and aspen groves.
What Makes It Great
Trail runners on Hunter Creek have the option to run for just a couple miles or upwards of 12.
Once in the valley, the trail continues for four miles along relatively flat terrain. The far end of the valley is very peaceful and there are few other people. Looking back from the way you are coming gives you a beautiful view of Aspen and the surrounding ski areas. It's possible to continue to Midway Pass from Hunter Creek, but the route-finding is difficult. It's also possible to run up the Hunter Creek jeep road to Van Horn Park and add up to eight miles to your run. Runners training for a backcountry marathon can continue from Van Horn Park to Four Corners and Sunnyside.Maps of the area can be obtained at the Ute Mountaineer.
Who is Going to Love It
Beginner trail runners and backcountry marathon runners alike will find the options along Hunter Creek and the scenery exciting.
Directions, Parking, & Regulations
Park at the 10th Mt. lot and follow signage to the Hunter Creek trail. Continue along Hunter Creek 1 ½ miles to the Hunter Creek valley floor, here the valley widens, and the terrain is flat. Hike 2 to 3 miles up the valley and cross the creek into a meadow. This is a great place to set up camp. My girls play in the stream and catch grasshoppers, so this is absolutely family friendly. The following morning, take your time and you'll still be out by noon. 2 hour hike in and out, So really can be a good intro to backpacking with children.
