Intro

Cyclists looking for a moderate climb and spectacular views will truly enjoy a road ride up Maroon Creek Road. After pedaling uphill for nearly eight miles from the roundabout, cyclists round a bend and are rewarded with one of North America's best views: the 14,000-foot Maroon Bells. In September, the ride is especially spectacular thanks to the brilliant aspen leaves and snow-capped peaks.

What Makes It Great

Effective mid-June through Labor Day between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Maroon Creek Road is closed to vehicles except for the guided bus tours which drive to and from every 20 minutes, so cyclists can enjoy relatively empty roads. Take a breather and take some pictures of you and your riding buddies in front of the Bells. Unless, there's low-hanging clouds, you're almost guaranteed a good view of the Maroon Bells.

Who is Going to Love It

More experienced mountain cyclists are best prepared for the ascent, but the short distance makes it doable for less experienced riders, too.

Directions, Parking, & Regulations

Ride from downtown Aspen along Highway 82 or hop on the bike route on Hopkins Ave. to the roundabout and ride up Maroon Creek Road for about eight miles until you reach the Maroon Bells. If you ride on the paved bike route, you'll pass an old mining building and community garden before coming to the pedestrian bridge at the very beginning of Maroon Creek Road. You can cross the bridge to access the road or stay on the paved path, as it eventually merges with the road. If riding along the bike path be aware of commuter bikers and walkers.
