Caney Fork Creek offers some of the best trout fishing in Western Carolina, but few know about this hidden gem for fly fishers. The pull off spot is about 14 miles from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, just outside of Sylva.
The Cullasaja River, located between Franklin and Highlands, NC, is a hot spot for mountain trout. This hatchery-supported river has a lot of rocky areas that are ideal for fly fishing, but you can also fish from the banks on the calmer parts of the river.
There's no one spot that's better than others, but the Gold Mine Road bridge is popular because the river is often stocked here, and there are plenty of pull offs along the road.
The broad, beautiful Little Tennessee is one of the most biodiverse rivers in North Carolina and it has a reputation as a top spot for small mouth bass. Rocky, wide and fast in some places, flat and narrow in others, its got a lot of fishing spots, but the Iolta Bridge outside Franklin and the little community of Cowee is a well known one.
